About

Brooke Allan

Born in Aviemore, Scotland

Based in Glasgow, Scotland

Brooke Allan is a Scottish artist and graphic designer based in Glasgow but was raised in a tourist hub in the Highlands. She has exhibited across Scotland, exploring themes of rural isolation and local heritage. Her work serves as a reflection of the past and a search for identity - by both highlighting the true nature of working class Highland life, and in searching for her own authentic self through a personal history of creating.

"With my art, I highlight the discrepancy between the commercialized perception of the Highlands, and the lived reality of working-class locals. I aim to give a voice to my actual community, culture and heritage.

Each piece serves as a moment of reflection and examination into the nature of my own identity within the hyper-consumerist landscape of my upbringing. Employing creative techniques handed down to me by my community, I reclaim my relationship to "Scottishness" from the empty simulacra of our history that is sold in tourist gift shops.

My work rejects the profit-driven stereotypes of my home and explores the raw experiences of the people and places that raised me."
